Could you be missing out on the potential of your assistant right in front of you? What if your executive assistant could bring more to the table?

As an executive assistant, I found myself in a unique position. My journey started like many others - handling schedules, managing emails, and organizing travel arrangements. However, I was fortunate to have a leader who saw beyond these traditional responsibilities. They recognized a potential in me that I hadn't fully acknowledged myself.

Many executive assistants have untapped potential that leaders often overlook. Throughout my career, I've met countless assistants who could out-lead the leaders around them if given the opportunity. These individuals possess strategic thinking abilities, exceptional problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of organizational dynamics.

To my fellow assistants, I offer this advice: Be faithful with the small things, anticipate needs before they arise, think strategically about every task, and actively look for opportunities to expand your role. Remember that if you want something different, you have to do something different.

The key to growing beyond your current position lies in:

  • Building strong relationships across the organization
  • Gaining influence through consistent excellence
  • Being strategic in your approach to everyday tasks
  • Clearly communicating your aspirations
  • Finding leaders who will invest in your development

To leaders, I encourage you to look closely at the assistants in your organization. They may be the untapped leadership gold you've been searching for. Give them opportunities to contribute beyond administrative tasks, invite them to strategic discussions, and invest in their professional development.

Leadership gold is often hiding in plain sight - don't miss the opportunity to discover and nurture it. When leaders recognize and develop the potential in their assistants, both individuals and the entire organization benefit from this powerful partnership.
